Construction research: wind tunnel experiment at the Centre scientifique & technique du batiment (CSTB), Nantes, France, showing pattern of turbulence around various objects. Built in 1979, the wind tunnel has been used for numerous studies on the effects of the wind on models of buildings & other large objects. The tunnel, 4 meters wide and 2 meters high, is capable of blasting winds of over 100 km/hour around models of various scales and sizes. Magnesium carbonate powder is used to visualise flow & turbulence. Model subjects have included the IBM tower in La Defense (a high-rise area of Paris), the new Pyramid at the Louvre and ESA's Ariane rocket.
