Light micrograph of a section through a braze, a technique for joining materials when welding is inappropriate, but a strong joint is required, as in this aircraft part. Brazing alloys usually melt at around 600 degrees Centigrade and are formulated from a variety of silver, copper, zinc and gold alloys. The join line runs horizontally across the centre of the image. The rugged features on either side of the join are dendrites projecting into the formerly molten zone. The dendrites grew while the interface was cooling; they are the result of new alloys forming to make the joint. Magnification: x200 at 35mm size.
