Rusting ship anchor. Worker contemplates a rusting ship anchor. Rust is hydrated iron oxide, produced by a chemical reaction between the iron metal in the anchor and the water and oxygen in the air. This replacement of the original metal weakens the structure of the anchor, as rust is more porous and brittle than iron.
