Rusty nail. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the tip of a rusty iron nail. Rust is hydrated iron oxide, and results from a reaction between iron and atmospheric water vapour and oxygen. This corrodes and weakens the original iron structure. The flaky structures seen are bits of rust that are coming away from the nail. Magnification: x500 at 6x7cm size.
