Corrosion research photographs. Collection of microphotograph negatives showing bands of corrosion found under a microscope. Studying the microscopic structure of the corrosion cracks can help identify the cause of the corrosion. The most common cause of corrosion is oxidation (reacting with the oxygen in the air), but other causes include salt from seawater, sulphur pollutants, stress, biological acids, and heat-related effects. This work is being carried out at the Scientific Institute, a research establishment in Breda, Italy.
