Materials corrosion research. Researcher placing a piece of metal in a machine. This is part of work being done on metal corrosion, such as developing anti-corrosion paints, and experimenting with chemicals that prevent bacterial corrosion of metals. The most common cause of corrosion is oxidation (reacting with the oxygen in the air), but other causes include salt from seawater, sulphur pollutants, stress, biological acids, and heat-related effects.
