X-ray microscope image of a crack in an aluminium/ silicon carbide composite material. The crack is about 50 microns wide, and runs parallel to the ply of the composite. Some smaller cracks, about 5 microns wide, may be seen surrounding the ceramic/metal interfaces (dark spots). This image is a single cross section, showing one of the 'slices' viewed simultaneously in parallel by the microscope. Ceramics of this kind have a variety of uses in the aerospace industry due to their light weight and high structural strength. Magnification: x1000 at 8x10 inch, x140 at 35mm size.
