Caption

Industrial centre in the Arctic. This is part of the Norilsk industrial centre, in the Krasnoyarsk region of Siberian Russia. Power stations and factories are seen in the background, with smoke rising from the smokestacks. Electrical power lines and pylons are also seen, while workers travel to and from the centre by road frm the nearby city of Norilsk. The centre is used mostly to process nickel and other metals mined in the area. Norilsk is the northernmost city in Siberia and one of the largest above the Arctic Circle. Photographed in March 2007.
