Blast furnace. Molten steel pouring into a blast furnace in a steel foundry creates a shower of sparks. In such a furnace, iron ore, coke and limestone are added to the furnace, and then subjected to blasts of heated air. Impurities are burnt off or converted to an insoluble slag which can then be skimmed off the surface of the molten metal.
