Lithium metal production. Worker cutting a sample from a cast containing lithium metal. Lithium is a highly reactive metal, and reacts vigorously with water in the skin or air. The worker is wearing a mask, gloves and overalls for protection. Lithium is recovered from ores and solutions in a variety of ways, though a common final stage involves its electrolysis from a mixture of fused lithium and potassium chloride. For an example of a lithium metal sample, see T810/264. This is the Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrate Works, Russia. Novosibirsk is in southern Siberia, near Russia's border with Central Asia. Photographed on 18 August 2006.
