Compost bin protection. Wire mesh being used to prevent rodents entering an open-ended compost bin that has been placed on grass. The wire pegs seen securing the compost bin to the ground were added to the original design. Without these pegs, the compost bin blows over in the wind when it is empty at the start of composting. Composting bins are used to store organic waste material such as grass clippings and organic kitchen waste. This material then decays into a form that can be used to fertilise a garden.
