Sewage treatment. Waste water being mechanically stirred during the aeration phase at a waste water treatment works. The purpose of aeration is to promote the growth of microorganisms which degrade the organic matter contained in the effluent. The microorganisms form a flocculant, or sludge, a proportion of which is removed and treated separately.
