Optical fibre manufacture. Worker with a preform (white) during the manufacture of optical glass fibres. The preform is a solid rod from which optical fibres are formed. A single preform can carry up to 250 kilometres of glass fibre. Optical fibres are long filaments of glass that carry signals, in the form of light pulses, over very long distances. They are commonly used in digital communications.
