Louvre pyramid, Paris, France. This structure of glass and steel is the entrance to the Louvre art museum. The surrounding buildings are part of the Louvre palace, which was home to the French royal family in the 18th century. The pyramids (several smaller ones were also built) were designed by the American architect I.M. Pei, and built in 1989. The main pyramid rises 21 metres above the ground, and provides access to underground galleries. The smaller pyramids act as skylights, allowing the underground galleries to be lit by daylight.
