Expansion joint. The space between the two sides of the joint allows the material of a structure to expand and contract safely as the temperature changes. Expansion joints are found in many types of structures, including buildings and bridges. If expansion joints are not used, the strain from thermal expansion and contraction may cause catastropic structural collapse.
