Engineer inspecting the San Francisco Bay Bridge. The Bay Bridge spans the bay, connecting San Francisco with Oakland. In the background is Treasure Island, which lies near the mid-point of the bridge; Oakland is visible on the horizon. The Bay Bridge is of an unusual two-level design, San Francisco-bound traffic travelling on the upper deck and Oakland-bound traffic on the lower (not visible here). Part of the bridge was destroyed during the 1989 earthquake, the upper deck collapsing onto the lower one, causing considerable loss of life.
