Bridge expansion joint. Lorry about to pass over an expansion joint in a bridge. The bridge expands in the heat and contracts when it is cool, which can cause severe damage. Several of these expansion joints are placed at different points in the road to take the burden of expansion and contraction. Therefore, the road is less likely to need maintenance. Photographed on the I-64 Bridge, Virginia, USA.
