Asbestos removal. Worker in full protective clothing using a tool to remove asbestos insulation from a building. Asbestos, a fibrous mineral, was used as a building material in the UK from the 1950s to the mid-1980s, due to its insulating and flameproofing properties. At the time, it was not realised that the asbestos fibres were carcinogenic when inhaled and as a consequence many people in the UK die each year due to asbestos related lung cancers.
