Open cast coal mine. View across the Kayenta coal mine in Arizona, USA. The mining started in the 1960s. The pits created by the large dragline excavators are about 30 metres wide and 1.5 kilometres long. Exhausted mines are restored with topsoil and re-seeded with plants, although inevitably some of the original ecology is permanently lost.
