Coal mining. Excavator machine loading coal onto a train truck. This is the Urtuisky coal mine in the Krasnokamensky district of the Chita region of Russia. It is a strip mine, where the coal is dug from near the surface, as opposed to digging deep underground. The coal from this mine is a type known as brown coal (lignite). This type of coal has a high moisture content, and a relatively low energy content. It is a more polluting form of coal than black coal. The Chita region is located in south-eastern Siberia, bordering Mongolia and China. Photographed on 10 August 2006.
