Copper mine. Disused opencast mine for extracting copper deposits. Opencast mining involves the removal of surface layers of rock to form a pit. It is usually used when extensive mineral deposits lie near the surface of the Earth. These are then removed with mechanical excavators. Opencast mining involves the destruction of large areas of surface vegetation. Photographed in Bisbee, Arizona, USA.
