Copper mine. Opencast mine for extracting copper deposits. Opencast mining involves the removal of surface layers of rock (upper right to bottom left) to form a pit (upper left). It is used when extensive mineral deposits lie near the surface of the Earth. These are then removed with mechanical excavators. Opencast mining involves the destruction of large areas of surface vegetation. This is the Robinson mine in Ely, Nevada, USA.
