Petrochemical plant at night. This plant is used for the production of ethene (ethylene, C2H4). Ethene is obtained by cracking natural gas and oil. The cracking process may be thermal or catalytic. Larger molecules, such as ethane (C2H6), are split into smaller molecules. Ethene is a colourless flammable gas that is manufactured in larger quantities than any other organic chemical. It is used in many chemical processes including polymerization of plastics. Photographed in South-East Asia.
