Drug library. Female technician using a bar code reader to catalogue vials in a library of drug molecules. The bar code consists of a number of stripes which contain information about the contents of the vial. This information can be read by a computer using a scanner and can assist with stock control. Pharmaceutical companies investigate the biological effects of natural and man-made molecules before storing them for possible future development as drugs. Photographed at the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi, which in 1996 has 104,000 different molecules stocked in its drug library.
