Cannabis research. Test tubes containing compounds found in cannabis. Cannabis is an illicit drug prepared from the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa). It produces a relaxing, narcotic effect and, in higher doses, hallucinations. The main active compounds are cannabinoids such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD, left). Cannabis-derived drugs may be medically useful due to their ability to relieve pain and nausea, increase appetite and control muscle spasms. It may relieve the symptoms of multiple sclerosis and chronic pain from nerve damage. It may also help relieve the side-effects of the drugs used to treat cancer and AIDS.
