Lighting manufacture. Automated manufacture of fluorescent light tubes. Fluorescent lights are a type of electric discharge lamp, in which an electric current is passed through an ionised low- pressure gas in a glass tube to produce light. Fluorescent lights contain mercury vapour and the tube is coated on the inside by phosphor. The mercury vapour produces invisible ultraviolet (UV) light when an electric current is passed through it. This UV light excites the phosphor and causes it to fluoresce in visible light. Fluorescent lamps can produce light which has the same frequency ranges as sunlight. They are also more energy-efficient than conventional light bulbs.
