Steel can used in food preservation. Although often referred to as tin cans, most modern cans are made from steel. The canning process involves sealing a foodstuff in an airtight container. It is then heated for a time and at a temperature sufficient to kill all the microorganisms within. The method was originally invented by a Frenchman after Napoleon Bonaparte requested a method to preserve food for his troops.
