Medical equipment undergoing gamma irradiation as a means of sterilization. The photogrpah shows the containers with the medical supplies being positioned over the gamma irradiation source, which is visible as a faint blue glow at bottom. This technique is a means of eliminating contaminants such as fungi, bacteria, insects and eggs. It is applied to food and is thought to be a safer procedure than the use of pesticides, some of which are known to contain carcinogenic substances. However, the safety of gamma irradiation when applied to food for human consumption is still under debate (1988) in the USA where this method is the most advanced.
