Retina scanning. Conceptual computer artwork of a laser beam scanning a retina through the pupil. The retina is the light-sensitive membrane that lines the inner wall of the back of the eye. The pattern of blood vessels on the retina is different for every individual, so scans of their arrangement can be used to identify people. Identification of people by measuring parts of the body is called biometrics. Other body parts that can be used include fingerprints, the iris (coloured part of the eye) and DNA sequences.
