Fingerprints are used as a means of identification, often in criminal investigations, because they are not only unique to the individual, but also remain the same over a lifetime. There are four main types of patterns or fingerprint classes: arch, tented arch, whorl, and loops. Fingerprint identification was discovered by Sir William Herschel in the 19th century and was first used as evidence in the trial of a murder by Henry Faulds.
