Nuclear missile silo. Soldiers watching the lifting of the cap of a nuclear missile silo. The nuclear missiles are below the ground, and are launched on rockets through openings like the one seen here. The opening mechanisms need to be tested on a regular basis to ensure they work when needed. This is an RS-20 ("Voyevoda") missile launching pad, part of a Russian nuclear missile silo, and located in Orenburg, Russia. This is a training site for soldiers from Russia's strategic missile troops division. Photographed in 2007.
