Diagram showing a perpetual motion machine proposed by Jean Antione Gervais in 1834. The idea is that weight of the balls moving outwards along the arms on the right of the apparatus would keep the wheel turning in a clockwise direction. Such a machine could not work as it would violate the law of conservation of energy.
