Glass manufacturing industry. Before the introduction of methods such as float glassmaking, this was how flat panes of glass were manufactured. The cylinders of glass would later be sliced open, heated and then pressed flat. At the time, this was more reliable than attempting to directly produce flat sheets of glass. In contrast, float glassmaking floats molten glass in a liquid to obtain a flat, pane of glass of even thickness. Artwork taken from Grands Hommes et Grands Faits de l'Industrie (Great Men and Great Facts of Industry), France, circa 1880.
