Bischopp rotary steam engine. Diagram of the rotary steam engine developed by Bischopp. Steam is used to drive pistons, and a system of gears and crankshafts convert the energy of the steam into rotary motion, used to drive wheels, electrical generators or other devices. Steam power reached its heyday in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, but has since been replaced by electrical power and fossil fuels.
