Building London's sewers. Engraving of London's main northern sewer being built in 1859 as part of Sir Joseph Bazalgette's improved system for the capital. As chief civil engineer to London's Board of Works, Bazalgette (1819-1890) designed the city's entire sewer system - a total of 155 kilometers of sewers covering an area of 256 square kilometers. The sewers were completed in 1865.
