Caption

Engraving of a Bullock Rotary Press of 1865. Designed by one William Bullock, this was the first press to use continuous web feeding (ie from a roll of paper rather than individual sheets). It was used primarily for printing newspapers, and was first used to print copies of the Philadelphia Enquirer. This illustration first appeared in "A Short History of the Printing Press", New York 1902.
