Book transcription. Coloured historical woodcut of a mediaeval monk transcribing a book. Before the invention of the printing press, in the 15th century, books had to be made by hand. This made them costly to produce, and they were confined to universities and monasteries. Many monks spent their entire lives producing and illuminating (decorating) books.
