Benz automobile. Title page of the patent awarded to German engineer Karl Benz in 1886 for his car design, showing a picture of the vehicle. This gas-powered motor tricycle was one of the first automobiles with an internal combustion engine. It produced 597 watts (0.8 horsepower) of power and could reach 250 revolutions per minute using a horizontal flywheel. Benz had been working on internal combustion engine design since 1877. The car was manufactured by Benz & Company (founded 1883) and was exhibited at the 1889 Paris Fair in France.
