War machines. Historical artwork of designs for an assault chariot (top) and an armoured tank (bottom left and right) by the Italian artist, engineer and scientist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). Leonardo wrote of his vehicles: "I can make armoured cars; safe and unassailable which will enter the serried ranks of the enemy with their artillery, and there is no company of men at arms so great that they will not break through". The chariot has a mechanism of scythes to quite literally slice through the enemy ranks. The tank was designed to have eight men inside it to make it move.
