Caption

US steam locomotive. Railway station with a steam locomotive (left) and a crowd of people on the platform. The railway station is Hanover Junction, in Pennsylvania, USA. This scene was photographed in 1863, during the US Civil War. In November of that year, the US President Abraham Lincoln travelled on a train that changed railroads at this station on its way to Gettysburg for Lincoln's dedication of the new National Cemetery. The scene would have been similar to this one. The two railroads are seen at right and left. This photograph is from the collection of the US Civil War photographer Mathew Brady.
