Electric escalator. Early 20th century artwork of people riding an electric escalator. The diagram at lower right shows horizontal steps on a rotating conveyor belt. The first escalator was built by Jesse Reno in 1897 in the USA, but designs had been developed earlier, including patents in 1892 and as early as 1859. The first commercial escalator, by Seeberger and Otis, was displayed at the 1900 World Exposition in Paris, France. Artwork from around 1910, in a French series on the marvels of electricity.
