Road testing machine. This machine was used to determine which paving techniques and materials were the most hard-wearing when exposed to heavy loads and high traffic levels. The road being analysed here is not a public road but a purpose-made testing track, so that the different paving methods can all be surveyed within the same research arena. Photographed at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK, in 1911.
