Early aerial flight. Drawing showing the preparations before the first human aerial flight in the USA. It took place on January 9th 1793 and saw the Frenchman Blanchard departing from Philadelphia and arriving 46 minutes later at Gloucester County, New Jersey. Blanchard, together with Gefferies, made on January 7th 1785 the first successfull airborne crossing of the English Channel. They left Dover at 3pm and landed near Calais 45 minutes later. The first unmanned flight of a hot-air balloon took place near Lyon, France, on June 4th 1783; the balloon was constructed by the two de Montgolfier brothers. Later that year the first human flight took place near Paris.
