Caption

Wright Flyer II. Wilbur and Orville Wright standing with the Wright Flyer II in May 1904 at Huffman Prairie, Ohio, USA. Following the first ever powered flight of the Wright Flyer I at Kitty Hawk in 1903, the brothers continued to develop their aircraft design. This resulted in the Flyer II being heavier, but with a more powerful (16 horsepower) engine. Unfortunately their new launch location was less prone to strong winds, which they had originally relied on. It was not until September 1904 and the development of a catapult system, which accelerated the Flyer II, that it was able to take-off and fly for 800 metres.
