Wright Flyer in a wind tunnel. Model of the Wright Flyer undergoing aerodynamic tests in a wind tunnel at NASA's Ames Research Centre, California, USA. The first ever powered flight was made by Orville Wright on 17 December 1903 at Kill Devil Hill, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA. The flight lasted 12 seconds and covered a distance of 36. Following these trials, this model will be displayed in the lobby of the Federal Aviation Administration in California. The data gathered from these trials will allow a replica to be built, which will be flown at Kitty Hawk to mark the 100th anniversary of powered flight.
