Chelyuskin search and rescue aviators from the USA and the Soviet Union, in front of a seaplane. From left to right: Soviet navigator Viktor Levchenko, Soviet pilot Sigizmund Levanevsky, US air mechanic and pilot Clyde Armistead and Bill Lavery. These aviators helped to save the crew of the exploration steamship Chelyuskin, which had become trapped in Arctic ice in 1934. The rescuers were among the first recipients of the title Hero of the Soviet Union. Photographed at Fairbanks, Alaska, in the USA.
