Soviet N-209 transpolar flight crew, before their fatal flight on 12th August 1937. They flew a modified DB-A aircraft (background) from Moscow over the Arctic towards Alaska. While over the Arctic, communications ceased. It is thought that the aeroplane crashed, though an extensive search failed to find any wreckage. The crew (left to right) are: Nikolai Galkovsky (radio operator), Nikolai Kastanayev (second pilot), Sigizmund Levanevsky (commander), Grigory Pobezhimov (flight engineer), Nikolai Godovikov (flight engineer) and Viktor Levchenko (pilot-navigator).
