Caption

Whale hunt. Engraving of a whaling ship (at right) with smoke rising as it boils blubber or whale fat. Beside it is the body of a dead whale (at lower left). The whale fat is being boiled to turn it into a fuel suitable for use in lamps. Large, factory ships like this that could process a whale at sea were introduced in the 1870s. The whales were hunted by teams of men who set out from the factory ships in small rowing boats. Image of South Sea whalers taken from an 1876 book.
