Diving history. Diver on board a ship preparing for a dive at the turn of the 20th century. His suit is made of rubberised cloth and is fully watertight. Air is supplied to him through air lines running from a pump on the ship, and he is wearing a brass helmet with glass portholes. To counteract the weight of the helmet, he is wearing weighted boots (not seen). Due to this, such suits were known as "heavy-footers". Photographed off Marseilles, France.
