Telegraph cable manufacture. Engraving of underwater telegraph cables being manufactured in the 19th century. These cables are being coated with gutta-percha, a natural, rubber-like subst- ance which has electrical insulation properties. These cables were used in an attempt to lay a telegraph link under the Atlantic Ocean between Europe and America. The attempt failed when the cable snapped. A later attempt was successful in 1866.
